On December 10, 2009, the U.S. International Trade Commission issued a press release announcing that it voted to institute an investigation of Certain Multimedia Display and Navigation Devices And Systems, Components Thereof, and Products Containing Same (Inv. No. 337-TA-694).

The investigation is based on a November 13, 2009 complaint and December 4, 2009 letter supplementing the complaint filed by Pioneer Corporation of Japan and Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc. of Long Beach, California.  The complaint alleges violation of Section 337 in the importation into the U.S. and sale of certain multimedia display and navigation devices and systems, components thereof, and products containing the same which allegedly infringe U.S. Patent Nos. 5,365,448, 6,122,592, and 5,424,951.  See our November 17 post for more details.

According to the Notice of Investigation, the Commission has identified the following as respondents in this investigation:

  • Garmin International, Inc. of Olathe, Kansas

  • Garmin Corporation of Taiwan 

  • Honeywell International Inc. of Morristown, New Jersey


Additionally, Christopher G. Paulraj of the Office of Unfair Import Investigations is identified on the Notice of Investigation as the Investigative Attorney assigned to handle this investigation.

Lastly, Chief ALJ Paul J. Luckern issued a notice assigning ALJ Carl C. Charneski as the presiding Administrative Law Judge in this investigation.
