On August 25, 2011, the U.S. International Trade Commission issued a press release announcing that it voted to institute an investigation of Certain Products containing Interactive Program Guide and Parental Controls Technology (Inv. No. 337-TA-801).

The investigation is based on a July 26, 2011 complaint filed on behalf of Rovi Corporation of Santa Clara, California; Rovi Guides, Inc., (f/k/a Gemstar-TV Guide International Inc.) of Santa Clara, California; United Video Properties, Inc. of Santa Clara, California; and Gemstar Development Corporation of Santa Clara, California.  The complaint alleges violation of Section 337 in the importation into the U.S. and sale of certain products containing interactive program guide and parental controls technology that infringe one or more claims of U.S. Patent Nos. 6,305,016; 7,493,643; and RE41,993.  See our July 28, 2011 post for more details.

According to the Notice of Investigation, the ITC has identified the following entities as respondents in this investigation:

• Sharp Corporation of Japan,
• Sharp Electronics Corporation of Mahwah, New Jersey, and
• Sharp Electronics Manufacturing Company of America, Inc. of Mahwah, New Jersey


In addition, acting Chief ALJ Charles E. Bullock issued a notice indicating that E. James Gildea will be the presiding Administrative Law Judge in this investigation.
