On November 18, 2011, the U.S. International Trade Commission issued a press release announcing that it voted to institute an investigation of Certain Projectors With Controlled-Angle Optical Retarders, Components Thereof, and Products Containing Same (Inv. No. 337-TA-815).

The investigation is based on an October 21, 2011 complaint and a November 2, 2011 supplement to the complaint filed by Compound Photonics Ltd. of the United Kingdom and Compound Photonics U.S. Corporation of Phoenix, Arizona alleging violation of Section 337 in the importation into the U.S. and sale of certain controlled-angle optical retarders, components thereof (including “light engines” or “optical engines”), and products containing the same that infringe one or more claims of U.S. Patent No. 6,829,027.  See our October 24, 2011 post for more details.

According to the Notice of Investigation, the ITC has identified Sony Corporation of Japan, Sony Corporation of America of New York, New York, and Sony Electronics Inc. of San Diego, California as the respondents in this investigation.

Further, Chief ALJ Charles E. Bullock issued a notice indicating that Robert K. Rogers, Jr. will be the presiding Administrative Law Judge in this investigation.
