On January 3, 2013, the U.S. International Trade Commission issued a press release announcing their vote to institute an investigation of Certain Electronic Devices, Including Wireless Communication Devices, Tablet Computers, Media Players and Televisions, and Components Thereof (Inv. No. 337-TA-862).

The investigation is based on a November 30, 2012 complaint and letters supplementing the complaint filed by Ericsson Inc. of Plano, Texas and Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson of Sweden alleging violation of Section 337 in the importation into the U.S. and sale of certain electronic devices, including wireless communication devices, tablet computers, media players and televisions, and components thereof that directly or indirectly infringe one or more claims of the following U.S. patents:  6,029,052; 6,058,359; 6,278,888; 6,301,556; 6,418,310; 6,445,917; 6,473,506; 6,519,223; 6,624,832; 6,772,215; and 8,169,992.  See our December 4, 2012 post for more details.

According to the Notice of Investigation, the ITC has identified Samsung Electronics America, Inc. of Ridgefield Park, New Jersey, Samsung Telecommunications America LLC of Richardson, Texas, and Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. of South Korea as the respondents in this investigation.

Lastly, Chief ALJ Charles E. Bullock issued a notice indicating that David P. Shaw will be the presiding Administrative Law Judge in this investigation.
